Interview with Tomek Rudzki (notes)

Tomek Rudzki is the co-founder of Ziptidev, a tool designed to diagnose indexing problems, and the Head of R&D at Onely, a technical SEO agency. With a background in IT, Rudzki’s journey into SEO began in high school and evolved over the years. He returned to SEO post-2016, drawn by the challenges and changes in the field, particularly after Google’s Penguin update. His work is focused on solving complex SEO issues, especially those related to Google indexation and JavaScript.

Key takeaways:

  • Indexing issues are becoming more common, even for normal HTML websites. 20-30% of pages on large sites may not get indexed. Use tools like ZipTie to identify and fix indexing problems.
  • JavaScript rendering is expensive for Google. As they try to render more complex JS, it strains their infrastructure and can negatively impact crawling and indexing. Simplify JS when possible.
  • AI content generation will pose big risks for Google if too much low-quality content enters the index. They will likely increase quality thresholds and prioritize existing content to combat this.
  • Keep an eye on SEO news on Twitter. Look for multiple reputable people discussing the same topic before diving in. Subscribe to news roundups like SearchNews to stay on top of the latest.

Tips on Google indexation

  • Use tools like ZipTie.dev to audit which pages are not getting indexed and diagnose why. Fix any issues to improve indexation.
  • Simplify JavaScript when possible as complex JS can negatively impact site crawling budget and indexation rates.
  • Focus SEO efforts on improving existing quality content rather than lower quality AI-generated content to maintain good indexation.
  • Spend 15 minutes per day reading latest SEO news on Twitter, SearchNews, etc to stay on top of Google algorithm updates that impact indexation.
  • Make sure to correctly implement tags like robot.txt, canonicals, noindex etc to avoid accidentally blocking pages from getting indexed.
  • Have a process to identify and fix soft 404 errors and duplicate content issues which can confuse Googlebot and hurt indexation.
  • Optimize site architecture, internal linking, crawl budget management to help Googlebot discover and efficiently crawl your important pages to get them indexed.
