Interview with Daniel K Cheung (notes)

Here are more detailed notes from my interview with Daniel K Cheung.

About Daniel Chung

  • Daniel started in SEO about 5 years ago, coming from a photography background
  • He spent over 3 years learning SEO at a digital marketing agency in Australia
  • Recently he transitioned into his first corporate, in-house SEO role at a large company
  • Daniel creates a ton of SEO content and videos, sharing hands-on tips on LinkedIn and YouTube
  • He offers freelance consulting focused on strategy, audits and communication

Daniel’s Tips on Semantic SEO & Schema

  • When getting started with schema, focus on basic types like FAQPage and Article first. Don’t get overwhelmed by complex, nested schema – build up gradually. Stick to common schemas with clear implementation guidance.
  • You don’t need to know how to code to add schema markup. Daniel shows how he copies schema examples into Visual Studio Code, then tweaks the IDs, names and details to match his content. Use Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool to validate markup.
  • After adding schema, monitor its visibility and performance in Search Console to prioritize benefits. For example, optimize FAQ schema first to reduce duplicate user support requests and clarify on-site answers.
  • Consider the business impact and goals before investing deeply in schema. Does enhancing event schema visibility help conversions more than optimizing product markup now? Take a pragmatic approach.
  • Daniel walks step-by-step through implementing schema changes using Visual Studio Code and live site examples. He shows how to update and validate markup to instill confidence in beginners.
  • Don’t worry about making mistakes with schema markup at first! Daniel deliberately shows common errors he makes on video so beginners realize it’s okay and part of the learning process.
  • Overall Daniel emphasizes starting simple with high-value schema focused on user needs before tackling more complex nesting and technical optimization. His encouraging, over-the-shoulder guidance helps new SEOs get hands-on schema practice quickly.
