Is Your Rank Math Sitemap Not Working? Here Is A Fix.

Last updated on October 13, 2021.

Rank Math is a really awesome WordPress SEO plugin that I use here on SEOSLY.

Some users of Rank Math report that their Rank Math sitemap returns a 404 page and that Google Search Console couldn’t fetch their Rank Math XML sitemap

Fortunately, this is not a serious problem and there is a very quick fix to it.

How To Fix The Rank Math Sitemap Error

I use Rank Math for my website and I really love this SEO plugin so I did my best to figure out what was happening when my XML sitemap (check my article on how to find the XML sitemap of a website) kept returning a 404 error.

The problem has to do with permalinks. Here is how to fix it:

  • Log in to the WordPress dashboard.
  • Navigate to Settings > Permalinks.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click Save Changes. Don’t make changes to the settings. Just click Save Changes

This will flush the permalink setting and fix your sitemap problem. Here are the screenshots if you are unsure what settings I’m talking about.

Go to Settings > Permalinks in your WordPress dashboard.

Just click on Save Changes.

Your Rank Math XML sitemap is probably working OK now.

Now go to your XML sitemap to make sure that it’s working.

Just type yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml and Rank Math should automatically redirect to yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml

In the case of my website https://seosly.com/sitemap.xml redirects to https://seosly.com/sitemap_index.xml.

The sitemap index contains the XML sitemaps depending on your settings. Here is how my sitemap index looks like.

If everything is OK, go to Google Search Console and do the following:

  • Navigate to Index > Sitemaps.

  • Remove the maps which Google couldn’t fetch buy going to the map and then clicking Remove sitemap.

  • Paste the URL of your sitemap index and individual XML sitemaps under Add a new sitemap and hit SUBMIT

  • The status should now be green and say Success.
